The Normans in Ulster: narratives of motte & Mediaeval church at Mountstewart in particular & the warriors in Down
Sunday 2nd September, 11:00am
Randal Scott, Speaker
Though the Normans came, saw, conquered & stayed in England, it is less well known that the Irish succeeded in expelling them. As a result of the archaeological digs and research of the survey group with whom he has been involved, Randal will take us through the fascinating key stories, people & features of this engaging Ulster ‘rebellion’.
From a well established farming family in Co. Antrim, Randal was Educated at the prestigious Royal Academical Institute, Belfast & Wadham College, Oxford, graduating in Chemistry. He qualified as a teacher & worked in Wells before returning to Northern Ireland, joining the Civil Service where he subsequently became Head of the Water Inspectorate for N. Ireland. Since retiring he has become an enthusiastic member of the Ulster Archaeological Society (QUB)& survey group for whom he has written many reports.
